Service Learning

Academy in Manayunk Community Service Mission:

  • To provide our students with a greater sense of shared responsibility and interdependence, thereby fostering an understanding and appreciation for a greater community, with the goal of building inclusive bridges between our school and our community.
  • To provide hands-on experiences which highlight the strengths and needs of others, both locally and globally.
  • To foster an environment in which students are cognizant of their own good fortune and feel inspired and empowered to share with others in a meaningful and purposeful way.
  • To instill a sense of deep pride in our students and their families for the integral role they play in contributing to the greater good, including exposure to various cultures, lifestyles and realities.

Upper School Community Service Graduation Requirement

Academy in Manayunk Upper School students are expected to perform community service each year as a requirement for graduation. Our six through eighth grade students will participate in school-sponsored service learning opportunities determined by our Dean of Students with input from the entire AIM Community.

Our ninth through eleventh grade students will participate in school-wide community service as well as choose from a thoughtful list of service learning opportunities to work on in small groups throughout the year. By the end of their junior year, our students will develop a year-long Senior service-learning proposal that encompasses the AIM Community Service Mission. This proposal is presented for approval to a Service Learning Committee comprised of students, teachers and administrators. Seniors will spend their last year of high school engaged in their Service Learning Senior Project during non-school hours.
