Sally L. Smith (1929-2007) founded The Lab School of Washington® in 1967 in Washington, DC.
Her innovative and rigorous teaching methods emphasize the arts and hands-on experiential learning techniques. As a result, thousands of children with learning disabilities have successfully completed high school and have gone on to college and beyond. Smith, the author of numerous books and internationally recognized leader in the field of learning disabilities was Professor in the School of Education at American University in charge of the Master's Degree Program in Special Education: Learning Disabilities. The numerous awards and honors that she was bestowed during her years of service to children who learned differently speak to the impact that Smith had during her lifetime.
The Academy In Manayunk is modeled after The Lab School of Washington® and our faculty and staff had the good fortune to be trained by Smith. Our commitment to Sally is to continue her legacy for years to come at AIM (Sally's Philadelphia School).
